Is it true that bright white sugar is dangerous?
During 2018, the
Ministry of Trade apparently revoked licenses from six food and beverage
industry companies. The reason is, these companies spread refined sugar to the
market without permission. This sugar can then be found in the Jabodetabek,
Central Java, and DIY regions. The problem is refined sugar is included in
sugar which is not good for health if it is often consumed.
Why can refined sugar be dangerous?
Health experts refer to
refined sugar as sugar which is only intended for the food and beverage
industry. This bright white sugar is not recommended by the general public
because it must go through various processes in order to be safe for
consumption by the body. In the world of food and beverage industry, there have
been special procedures for processing refined sugar. Meanwhile, if we use it
directly when making food or drinks, then we will be more susceptible to
adverse effects.
For information, the
bright white color of refined sugar indicates that this sugar has a much higher
level of purity compared to sugar in general. When it is still in the form of
raw sugar which is the result of the initial sucrose from sugar cane, this
sugar cannot be consumed directly and processed into several types of sugar,
including refined sugar. To make it refined sugar, the molasses content is
removed. For this reason, the brown coating on sugar crystals disappears. This
makes refined sugar look bright white and has no dirt.
If we consume too much
refined sugar in large quantities, the body also needs calcium, magnesium and
vitamin B complex in very high amounts just to process it. The problem is that
if the body loses these nutrients just to process sugar, then we will lose
magnesium and calcium from the bones and teeth. We will also be more susceptible
to osteoporosis and other health problems.
In addition, excessive
consumption of refined sugar will also make us more susceptible to diabetes
because it is easy to break down sugar into blood sugar in the body. Consuming
it will certainly make a surge in blood sugar which can impact on the increased
risk of diabetes and premature aging.
Choose the right sugar
Even though the
consumption must be limited, sugar is still often consumed for daily needs. In
order to prevent adverse health effects, we should choose the right sugar.
Here are the
characteristics of good and good quality sugar.
Pay attention to the color
As mentioned earlier,
refined sugar tends to have a bright white color. Health experts do not advise
us to choose sugar with these characteristics. We should choose a yellow or
brownish one because this sugar usually does not have coloring material. In fact,
the taste also tends to be sweet naturally.
Has a rougher texture
Refined sugar tends to
have a much smoother texture than coarse granulated sugar. This rougher sugar
is more suitable for us to choose.
Do not choose those that look runny or wet
We recommend that we do
not choose water that is runny or wet because the quality tends to decrease
significantly. Sugar that has clumped also signifies the same thing, namely a
decrease in quality. Spend this sugar immediately so that the quality does not
decrease further.
This sugar dissolves easily
Sugar that is difficult
to dissolve in water tends to no longer be of high quality. One characteristic
of high quality sugar is that it is easily dissolved when used for mixed
drinks.
