Can Hypertension Make Minus Eyes More Severe?

There is an assumption that is trusted by the community, namely if someone who has experienced a minus eye is also affected by hypertension or high blood pressure, the minus eye condition becomes more severe. Actually, is this presumption in accordance with medical facts?

Health expert from the Indonesian Ophthalmologist Association (PERDAMI) dr. Rina La Distia Nora, SpM (K), PhD said that hypertension that is not well controlled can actually affect the condition of eye health. This is caused by the influence of the condition of the blood vessels that have a large effect on the eyes.

"Hypertension is directly related to blood vessels. In fact, there are also many blood vessels in the retina of the eye. People with high blood pressure have blood vessels that tend to be stiff so they can inhibit blood flow. This condition has a big effect on eye health, "said Dr. Rina.

However, this eye health disorder associated with hypertension is hypertensive retinopathy that affects the condition of the retina and is not associated with a minus eye condition.

"So hypertensive retinopathy has many levels. The more severe the condition of hypertensive retinopathy, the greater the visual impairment that arises because the nerves of his eyes have been affected, "explained Dr. Rina.

When experiencing high blood pressure, the walls of blood vessels in the retina will become thicker. This will trigger narrowing of the arteries and make the blood supply to the retina decrease. This condition damages the nerves and eventually causes vision problems. In some cases, this can even affect blindness.

Health experts refer to those who have long-term hypertension, heart disease, atherosclerotic conditions or rigid blood vessels, people with diabetes, people with high cholesterol, obese people, those who like to eat foods with high salt content, hobbies for smoking, hobby of drinking alcohol, and who exposed to stress as the people most vulnerable to hypertensive retinopathy. Symptoms of this health problem are a gradual decrease in vision, swelling of the eyes, double vision, headaches, and rupture of blood vessels.

In order to prevent this health problem, people with hypertension must be very good at controlling their blood pressure.
